Why Reading is Important For Kids

Reading is an important part of child development, as it helps to develop analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills. It plays a key role in helping kids to expand their imaginations, understand concepts and facts, and build up their knowledge base. If you follow me on social media or know me personally, you must be knowing that my sister-in-law is an author and she has enculcated this habit of reading in both of my kids. Though my younger child is just 3, but she loves to listen the stories and asks us to read her something from the book while my elder child, my son is an avid reader and loves to read story books and comics like tinkle.

In this post I am sharing why reading is important for kids with an intention that you get inspired and make your kids read too.

Why reading is important for kids:

Improved communication and expression

Reading helps children to express themselves better, as it provides them with a large repertoire of vocabulary and phrases. This helps them to communicate their ideas accurately and clearly. It also improves their ability to think, imagine, and conceptualize, giving them the capacity to reason, follow instructions, and solve problems.

Improved creativity and better understanding

Reading can also nourish their creativity, as books provide a wealth of information about different cultures and people. This helps kids to develop empathy and understanding of the world, as well as to appreciate different perspectives and opinions. Reading also helps kids to engage in fantasy, which encourages their imagination and creativity.

Improved confidence & self-esteem

Reading can help children to build self-confidence, as they are able to understand and appreciate different stories and points of view. This develops their self-esteem, as they are able to feel accomplished and proud of what they can understand and learn from books.

Improved vocabulary

When a child reads something, they come across so many new words that they might have never heard before. They understand its meaning and learn it. This helps in improving their vocabulary so nicely. Even the famous writers like Paulo Coelho or Shashi Tharoor suggest that if you wish you improve your vocabulary, you must read.

Digital detox

This is an era of internet and kids spend most of their free time in either watching tv or youtube or playing games on their tabs and phones. When a kid starts to read, especially physical books, they get a digital detox. This digital detox is helps kids in staying away from gadgets which is automatically a good thing for kids.

Overall, reading is an important skill for children to develop and is vital for their growth and development. It helps to improve their knowledge and understanding of the world, develop critical thinking, express themselves more clearly, and build self-esteem. Hope this helps!
