What Makes Goli Soda Different From Other Kids Movies

Movies are the perfect medium for entertaining people, but acclaimed directors have used movies as a tool for making people aware of the real issues that persist in today’s society. Many such directors came from Sandalwood a.k.a Kannada film industry, which is known for making some of the best commercial movies. However, it is no slouch when it comes to making kids movies that make you think, and Goli Soda is one such movie. In this article, I’m going to talk about what makes Goli Soda different from other kids based movies.

Before we get started, let’s look at some details about the movie. Goli Soda is a remake of the Tamil movie of the same name which hit theatres in 2014. The original was an instant hit at the box office with good reviews pulling in from both the general audience and the critics.

Coming to the narrative, the movie revolves around four young kids who have been brought up in a slum and eventually decides to change their lifestyle by starting their own canteen. But what does Goli Soda do to make its underdog tale stand apart from other Indian kids movies? That’s exactly what I have listed below.

Realistic Tone:

Movies that are based on kids in India usually have a dream-like feel-good vibe to them. Because of which, many of these movies come across as sugar-coded. That’s not the case with Goli Soda. Goli Soda was able to beautifully capture the real life of young kids growing up in a slum who despite their shortcomings, try to start their own business. But the challenges that they face are not simple conflicts, but lasting ones with a brutal aftermath. Despite the grim tone, the movie is able to showcase the reality of slum kids without being off-putting. Kudos to the director for going against the grain and approaching the film from a different perspective.

Massy Elements:

Unlike any other kid-centric movie, Director, Raghu Jaya, perfectly infused the mass elements with the thriller portions of the movie giving it a ‘Massy’ appeal, and it was unlike anything Kannada audience has ever seen before in a kid-centric movie. Even the fight scenes pack quite a punch without coming across as over the top.

How it dealt with romance:

Of all the elements that were there in the movie, the romance track is the one that was mostly overlooked by the audience and you can’t blame them for that because of the fact that Goli Soda kind of paces up after the interval. However, the director did a fantabulous job capturing the first love of one of the kids, and it will surely make you nostalgic about your childhood crushes.

In the end, I’ve said it before, and I’m going to say it again, Goli Soda is not your typical kid movie. It’s way more than that. So, you should definitely watch the movie on ZEE5 if you haven’t already. Also, let me know what you think about the movie in the comment section.
