Bithoor Near Kanpur – Land of God Bhrama and Rishi Valmiki

Bithoor the hidden gem of Uttar Pradesh. Bithoor is historic ancient city located at banks of river Ganga and it is nearby to Kanpur city. Bithoor is located approx 15 km from Kanpur. One can easily travel through road and visit here. in 18 century at 1857, Bithoor was the centre of War Of Indian Independence. Popular freedom fighter like Nana Sahib was based in this beautiful town. Currently Bithoor comes under Kanpur metropolitan area.

Heard from many local people of Kanpur and Bithoor that name of this city comes from Beeron Ka Thaur. This means land of brave heros. In Indian history of independence Bithoor once played major role and if you read more about this then you will exactly come to know why this land is known or famous for brave women and men. Other names of Bithoor are Brahmavrat, Brahmasmatipuri and Utpalaranya.

Center of Earth

In Many mythological story of Brahma, Bithoor is mentioned. As we all know Brahma is the creator of universe so Bithoor plays major role in this story. God Brahma performed 99 Yagnas in Bithoor at banks of river Ganga before creating Satrupa and Manu.  Satrupa and Manu are children of Brahma and Saraswati.  It is believed that once God Brahma himself put his foot nail in earth and marked it as center of the earth, Thus Bithoor is considered as central point of earth and all this happened at Brahmavrat Ghat.

Ramayan Days

During Dashratha – The king of Kosala Kingdom, Bithoor used to come outside limits of Ayodhya so God Ram’s younger brother left Ram’s wife Sita here after they returned from Lanka and Ram has given up with their relation. It is also believed that Sita Mata gave birth to luv and Kush at Valmiki Ashram and raised both of them here. In Bithoor only Luv and Kush stopped horse of Shri Ram’s Ashwamedha Yagna. Thus Rishi Valmiki wrote Ramayana here. Still today you can visit Valmiki Ashram, Sita Rasoyi etc.

Story of Dhruv Tara – Polar Star

This is place where Dhruv become Dhruv Tara. In ancient days when King Uttanpada ruled this place. During this time Bithoor was known as Utpalaranya. Story was Uttanpada son Dhruv stood on his toe and worshiped god Vishnu and he received boon and became Dhruv Tara or Pole Star. The place Dhruv stood on his toe is known as Dhruv Teela.

The place where Rani Lakshmi Bhai was trained

Jhansi ki Rani, when she was 4 year old was trained to be warrior at Bithoor. This is the place where she got name as Manu. Till Rani Lakshmi Bhai turned 16, she was trained here. Nana Saheb the freedom fighter was adopted by Peshwa Baji Rao II made Bithoor as his capital. Since that day many Maharashtrain Families stay in Kanpur and Bithoor.
