New research suggests that eating on the basis of your blood group could be quite helpful for you and is also known as blood group diet.

The theory goes that the genetically inherited reaction, caused by proteins found in food called lectins, can cause blood cells to clump or adhere together. The lectins target an organ or bodily system and the blood cells can start to agglutinate,when you eat foods that comprise of lectins that are unsuited with your blood group antigen.

The immune system will work to protect you for the most part, but a small percentage of lectins can end up in the blood stream, causing reactions in different parts of the body. Some bacteria have aninclination towards one blood group as opposed to another, and consume that blood type antigen as a source of energy. Many of the byproducts are beneficial to the digestive tract.

The main characteristics of the Blood Group Diet are based on the four different blood group:

Blood Group O

Blood Group O is the most common blood group. According to the Blood group Diet, Type O’s should eat a high-protein diet that’s heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish and vegetables. Grains, beans and dairy should be kept to a minimum to best avoid a predisposition to asthma, hay fever, allergies and arthritis.

Best foods: Lean beef, lamb, turkey or chicken, garlic, and ginger.

Worst foods: Cruciferous veggies such as cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and mustard greens.

Blood Group A

Blood Group A should aim to be meat-free, instead focusing on fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains. Ideally, you should look for organic and fresh, as people with group A blood have a complex immune system.

Best foods: Berries, plums, figs, apples, avocados, pears, peaches, broccoli, artichokes, carrots, garlic, nut butters, seeds, beans and soy.

Worst foods: Sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.

Blood Group B

Group B’s should avoid lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, corn, wheat, buckwheat, and sesame seeds. Chicken is also said to be problematic. They are encouraged to eat green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy. Group B’s generally have a strong immune system and tolerant digestive system, making them lucky enough to be able to eat most foods with little worry.

Best foods: Lean lamb, beef and turkey, leafy greens, bananas, grapes, pineapple, yoghurt, cheese and milk.

Worst foods: Grains, buckwheat, peanuts, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.

Blood Group AB

Group AB’s tend to have the fewest problems with allergies, but heart disease, cancer and anaemia are medical risks for them. Foods to include in diet are tofu, seafood, dairy and green vegetables. Foods to avoid including are caffeine, alcohol, and smoked or cured meats, as type AB’s tend to have low stomach acid.

Best foods: Cherries, grapes, watermelon, figs, salmon, tuna, sardines, lean turkey and a variety of veggies.

Worst foods: Oranges, corn, buckwheat, chicken, pork and shellfish.

Because the Blood Group Diet dictates that you eat very specific types of food based on your blood group, it doesn’t allow much for personal tastes or dietary restrictions. A person with diabetes, for example, may be told to eat a diet high in protein, but their blood type may suggest keeping away from animal proteins.It’s important to consult with a nutritionist or medical professional before beginning any new diet.
